Diurnal/Nocturnal, curated by Mark Dion, features a selection of prints highlighting the theme of day and night drawn from the Neiman Center’s archive. In keeping with his practice of exploring the natural world, Dion selected images by artists inspired by living phenomena and built environments. Ann Craven’s vibrant woodcut of a sparrow, Dylan Graham’s laser cut silhouette of a threatened landscaped, Brad Kahlhamer’s etched skull and Kiki Smith’s photogravures of the phases of the moon are just some of the prints on view.

The Neiman Center has collaborated on a number of print projects with Mark Dion, whose diverse body of work – from sculpture and installation to drawing and printmaking – has focused primarily on the history of natural history. Armed with a wry wit and critical eye, Dion examines and questions longstanding ideologies and the cultural institutions that have played a central role in disseminating the information we receive.

Diurnal/Nocturnal is the fourth installation in a series of artist-curated exhibitions held at the Neiman Gallery through April 2023 that celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies. The artists curating the exhibitions – william cordova (September 8 – October 14, 2022), Kiki Smith and Valerie Hammond (October 20 – November 23, 2022), Nicola López (December 1 – January 26, 2023), Mark Dion (February 6 – March 23, 2023), Rirkrit Tiravanija and Tomas Vu (March 30 – April 27, 2023) – have generously collaborated with the Neiman Center to produce some of the most significant and innovative contemporary editions. The exhibitions represent the artists’ unique perspectives on the Neiman Center’s last twenty-five years of printmaking.
