Shahzia Sikander

Born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1969, Sikander received her BFA from the National College of Arts in Lahore and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. As a student at the National College of Arts, Sikander absorbed the visual histories of Indian and Persian miniature painting. Upon moving to the United States, she began integrating personal and contemporary symbols outside of the realm of this traditional form into her work. In addition to painting, drawing and printmaking, Sikander has worked in video, in which her more abstracted imagery spins in a central vortex-like space. Sikander has shown her work extensively in solo and group exhibitions and biennials throughout North America, Europe and Pakistan. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Park, DC; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; The UCLA Hammer Museum, LA, CA; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY. She has been the recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, the Joan Mitchell Award, and the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. Sikander lives and works in New York.
